If you’ve spent more than a minute on Instagram, then you’ve for sure noticed that Away luggage is most influencers’ suitcase of choice. Over the past few years, the luggage company has exploded, surpassing big brand names in the space like Samsonite and Tumi. In fact, if you Google “luggage,” Away luggage is probably one of the first ads that comes up.
And it’s not just IG influencers who go ga-ga for Away (#spon, #SwipeUp, #LinkInBio). Big-name celebrities like Karlie Kloss, Jessica Alba, and Margot Robbie, and even NBA star Dwayne Wade have been spotted wheeling around Aways.
Away luggage has built a cult-like following for its recyclable polycarbonate, aluminum, and nylon suitcases, thanks to great marketing and the intentional targeting of celebs and influencers. According to their website, Away bags are built to last and thanks to highly-coveted features like a smooth, aesthetically-pleasing surface, external battery and USB ports for on-the-go charging, roomy interior compartments, and 360° wheels, people are going crazy for them.
Anyway, Away luggage isn’t just popular in sales—it’s also popular in searches, too, which is why we’re compiling all the answers you may need in one convenient spot. Need answers to all your burning Away luggage questions? We’ve got ’em all. Keep reading for everything you need to know about Away!
Where can you buy Away luggage? It’s the question nearly every traveler wants to know. Away luggage is available for purchase in their brick and mortar stores, which are generally located in major cities like Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.
You can also purchase Away luggage online. It’s available from their online store. Away is not currently for purchase at any other destinations, even online ones, like Amazon. (Unless it’s used and being sold by an unverified seller.)
Away luggage can ship to almost anywhere, except for Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. But many want to know, where is it shipped from? Away’s bags are designed in the company’s Manhattan HQ and according to their website FAQ, then manufactured across Asia. The site lists Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Vietnam as its suppliers.
Of course, you can pack Away luggage like you would pack any other kind of luggage. I have the Carry-On bag, which comes with two compartments for packing, a mesh compartment in the middle, and a laundry bag for storing dirty clothes while traveling.
In addition to suitcases, Away luggage also makes and sells interior organizers, which many people have coined “packing cubes.” You could use these “packing cubes” to maximize the space in your Away luggage while packing, or you can use cubes from another brand, too. Packing cubes require very small folding or rolling of clothes in order to get the most out of the space. It’s also a great way to stay organized, you know, like Marie Kondo.
Away luggage comes with a TSA-approved luggage lock. To utilize the locking system, you’ll have to create a personalized code. But don’t worry—in the event of an emergency, TSA won’t need your code in order to get in your bag. TSA employees have a special key that will pop any TSA-approved luggage lock open, so it won’t ever be an issue.
Now, back to your personalized combination. How do you set the Away luggage lock? You should start with the lock open, zipper pulls released. The dials on the lock should be 0, 0, and 0. Now, push the reset button—the small square button adjacent to the dials—down with a pen or something pointed. You’ll hear a click, then can let go. Slide the digits of the dial to your personalized combo. Once you have the three numbers you desire, slide the latch toward the dials. This will cause the reset button to pop back up. Now, your combination is set!
Need more of a visual? Away luggage has you covered. In addition to providing a lock how-to on their website, they also link to this instructional video, as well.
If you have an Aluminum Edition bag, the lock process is a little different. To read more about locking an Aluminum Edition bag, check out Away’s instructions here.
Now, the Away website lists a disclaimer and it’s a valid one. Once you set your lock, no one can get into your bag and there’s also no reset. Even if you contacted Away, they can’t infiltrate your luggage. So, Away recommends saving it in your phone, writing it down on a piece of paper, or emailing the combination to your address.
Many Away luggage bags come with a battery pack. This can come in handy while traveling because the battery pack (located under the handle; pull the handle up first to access) features two USBs ports that you can use to charge your phone, tablet, computer, or anything other device. Away claims that the battery can power up to four full charges before it needs a recharge itself.
Now, the suitcase battery inside an Away bag is compliant with airline policies, FAA, TSA, and Dot. It also meets the requirements of UN/DOT 38.3. You can bring it into the cabin of any flight. However, some airlines will ask you to remove the external battery from the suitcase before putting it into the compartment.
Don’t worry—removing the battery isn’t an inconvenience at all. It’s totally removable and easily ejects from its secret compartment in the Away luggage. As mentioned above, the battery pack is located underneath the handle of most Away suitcases. Pull the handle of the suitcase up first, then you’ll see the door to the compartment. Push it in gently and it should pop open.
To remove the battery, do the same thing. Push down gently on the battery and should pop up like a Pop-Tart coming out of a toaster.
Away luggage comes from founders Stephanie Korey and Jennifer Rubio. Korey and Rubio founded Away luggage just a few years ago—2015, to be exact—in New York City. Since starting, they’ve sold more than 300,000 suitcases and, according to Fortune, have become one of the highest-funded startups created by women.

If you have an Away bag that comes with an ejectable battery, then it will come with a wall adapted and micro-USB. To recharge your Away luggage’s battery, eject it (instructions above), plug in the wall adapter to the battery on one end and to the plug on the other. According to Away’s website, it can take as long as eight hours for the battery to fully recharge. For this reason, Away recommends plugging it in overnight, especially if you’re leaving for a trip the next day.
Away luggage is designed at the company’s HQ in New York, then manufactured across Asia—Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Vietnam are all listed as suppliers.
Away sells several different travel-focused products included suitcases, bags, interior organizers, and smaller accessories like stickers, passport covers, luggage tags, and their very own Here magazine. All of these items come at very different price points.
In regards to Away suitcases, there are several different models and collections. The most popular include the Carry-On, the Bigger Carry-On, the Medium, and the Large. The Carry-On starts at $225, the Bigger Carry-On at $245, the Medium at $275, and the Large at $295. The most expensive bag they currently sell is the Large in their Aluminum Edition, which clocks in at $595.
You don’t need to charge the bag itself, but because most Away bags (the Carry-Ons and Bigger Carry-Ons) come with a TSA-approved external battery so that you can charge your devices on-the-go, you will have to plug it in for a recharge at some point.
Luckily, Away bags that come with a battery also come fully-stocked with a wall adapter. First, eject the battery (instructions above), then plug the adapter into the battery on one side and a wall socket on the other. The battery may take up to eight hours to charge, as it can fully recharge a phone four times before needing a recharge on its own.
Now, the info everyone is scouring the Internet for: an Away luggage promo code! If you’re looking to get highly-coveted Away luggage at a discounted price, no one can blame you. We don’t have our own promo code here at Parade, however Away bags are very popular amongst YouTubers and Instagram influencers and celebs, which means that most of them have a promo code for Away. Away products come with a 100 day trial period. (The only exceptions are personalized items.) If, after or during the 100 days, you don’t feel the Away luggage is a good fit for you, you have two options: either a full refund or exchange.

Once an item is exchanged, the 100-day trial period does not restart. You still have 100 days from your original order day to either exchange again or request a full refund.
Additionally, Away does not offer refunds for shipping fees. If you originally paid for expedited shipping, you will not get that fee back, only the cost of the product itself.
