OMA (Oswalds Mill Audio) Debuts K3 Direct Drive Turntable—An AnalogPlanet Exclusive

The design goals include providing “…absolute constant rotational speed under dynamic playing conditions. The motor must be able to dominate the platter since its inertia alone is not enough to maintain constant speed. The motor/platter must work together as an optimized system to hold speed constant.” In addition the design must “provide an absolutely stationary platform supporting the platter and arm. The structure needs to be heavy and grounded via one point only to allow energy to be unambiguously transmitted away from the turntable”. Starting from the foundation, the chassis is a monolithic, self-damping, cast hypo eutectic iron alloy design claimed to be ultra stiff to maintain dimensional integrity under dynamic conditions. The complex casting produced using 3D printing techniques, features internal galleries filled with proprietary damping material consisting of special oil and particulate matter. The high mass chassis, optimized in cooperation with Bucknell University conducted FEA resonance testing, sits upon 3 pointed footers. The motor, mounted at the chassis bottom to maximize distance to the record surface is a heavily shielded, high torque, 18 pole, slotless, cor...

Now, BBMP plans shoulder drains to check waterlogging

!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML+RDFa 1.0//EN” “http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/DTD/xhtml-rdfa-1.dtd”>  After the introduction of milling machines to get rid of potholes, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to make shoulder drains along major main roads to prevent the accumulation of water on the roads.Since they are built along the whole stretch of the road, these drains will help in preventing waterlogging and will also help in reducing the number of potholes. These shoulder drains will be built right next to the footpath and will be about one foot wide. A slope will be created since the depth of the drain will be about 25 mm near the road and 40 mm near the footpath. This slope will facilitate water flow into these drains.“This shoulder drain is impervious and it allows the rain water to flow into the main drain. This has two advantages — the waterlogging is less and eventually the number of potholes will also be reduced since the water will not accumulate on the road which will make the road wet and lead into a potholes after heavy rains,” said B S Prahallad, superintending engineer, road and infrastructure, TVCC.There is a ...

It’s not often that architects have the chance to dress up a skeleton. But that’s what confronted Cheshire Architects at the 1939 hangar originally built to house the gargantuan Sunderland and Short Empire flying boats at Hobsonville’s Catalina Bay. The centrepiece of a collection of heritage buildings destined for adaptive reuse had been stripped back to its essential structure to remove the asbestos cladding.  It wasn’t the first skeleton on this site to undergo a transformation. That was what is now known as the Catalina Workshop, a bui...

Our driveways should be safe from thieves, but it’s all too common for drivers to wake

Our driveways should be safe from thieves, but it’s all too common for drivers to wake up to find an empty space where their car, van or motorbike used to be. While it’s impossible to watch your vehicle 24/7, investing in driveway security device from Halfords can deter or disrupt a thief from their work. Driveway lights switch on automatically when someone breaks the invisible signal it sets off. Using powerful LED lights, these sensor-activated security lights will only activate at night. While they might be set off by a cat every now and again it’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind you get that something is always ready to shine a light on an intruder. Spend a little more and you’ll have greater control of the device. The Smartwares 16W Robot Security Light allows you to set the light up to ensure coverage (and minimise any disruption to neighbours!). LED lights are known for their efficiency, but if you’re worried about the impact on your bills (and the planet) we’ve got solar-powered lights too. We also stock outdoor cameras which can keep a watchful eye on your driveway. Capturing the action (or lack of it) in HD1080P, any criminals certainly won’t smile when the...
