Having a car jack in your vehicle in case of emergency can mean the difference between 20 minutes to change a flat tire and being stranded on the road, waiting for help. Whether you go off-road with your vehicle and need to lift it frequently, or just want something in case of an emergency, we’re here to help you find the best electric car jack for your needs. This type of jack is usually hydraulic-powered and resembles the shape of a short and stubby bottle. Because of this compact design, they’re desirable for larger vehicles where clearance isn’t necessarily an issue. Though they’re not ergonomically shaped for easy storage, they do often have a higher weight limit than your typical electric floor jack.  You’ll likely see a lot of mechanics using—and owning—this type of car jack. Though it’s manually operated, it works on the same basic principle as all jacks; it uses a mounting point and a lifting system to hold the car during a lift. Floor jacks typically roll on four wheels and come with a detachable handle that pivots up and down to lift the car.  Scissor jacks a...

Lasersaur That Cuts 1/2″ Plywood And 10mm Acrylic (Pew-Pew)

Remember when building your own 3D printer was a big deal? We’re starting to think that building your own laser cutter might be the next hot topic. Boasting a 16,000 square-foot facility, the Dallas Makerspace is an impressive collaboration of local artists, engineers, makers, and thinkers. Recently they embarked on building a serious laser cutting machine. They chose to go with the an open-hardware design rather than buying an off-the-shelf unit. What they built is based on the Lasersaur plans. (Another popular open-source build is the buildlog.net unit.) They ended up with a huge 24″ by 48″ cutting bed and with a laser tube rated for 100 watts continuous output. It can cut 1/2″ plywood and 10mm acrylic with ease. The entire machine is built from 20mm Misumi aluminum t-slot extrusions, making more like a giant erector set then a commercial built machine. We hadn’t seen too many of the Lasersaur builds out in the wild, so we thought you might like to see one too. Now, before you start ordering parts to build your own, you should know that a top of the line build like this will run you about $7-10k. But by comparison if you were to go with something with the same cutting area and...

Most people have very set patterns for how they get their shut eye, and that extends

Most people have very set patterns for how they get their shut eye, and that extends to which side of the bed they lie down on and which direction they fac… There is an old expression that, when someone is especially disagreeable or in a bad mood, that they “got up on the wrong side of the bed.” Most people have very set patterns for how they get their shut eye, and that extends to which side of the bed they lie down on and which direction they face. It stands to reason they would get up on the same side of the bed most of the time. A survey by mattress maker Saatva suggests something as simple as picking the right side of the bed or facing or not facing your partner actually make a difference in how well you sleep. The survey quizzed consumers on their bedside practices and how it affects their sleep and mood the following day. Not surprisingly, it found that 40% of adults have always slept on the same side of the bed. Perhaps more of a surprise, more than half said they don’t ever remember making a conscious decision about the side of the bed on which to lie down. When asked to think about it and actually pick on one side of the bed or the other, 20% ended up choo...

Let’s Find Out If Using Electric Eels To Charge Your Tesla Is A Good Idea

For decades, the dream of motorists all over the world has been a car that could run on frothy buckets of cheap, garbage fish like tilapia or something. So far, though, that dream has eluded humankind. But now, thanks to the rise of modern electric cars, perhaps it’s possible with the intermediary help of electric eels. So let’s take a moment to really think this through: How well can you recharge an electric car using eels? What I’m envisioning here is a sort of range-extender system. Certainly electric eels aren’t going to replace the EV’s battery simply because they’re animals (Electrophorus electricus, and it’s technically a knifefish, in case anyone asks) and as animals they’re not really able to provide constant, uninterrupted energy like a battery can, despite what The Matrix wants you to think. But you actually can harness the electrical energy from an electric eel. Scientists have already figured out how to harness eel-tricity to power things. Here’s a video of an eel in a tank powering lights on a Christmas tree: So, we know it’s possible to harvest the electrical power from eels to power other things. Now we just have to figure out if it’s actually a good idea beyond ...

How to Clean a Shower Drain (Plus Why It’s So Smelly)

There’s nothing less relaxing than getting ready to take a nice bath or shower only to be greeted by a stinky odor coming from your shower drain. Even worse is realizing the water isn’t going down after you’ve already toweled off. A clogged shower drain is a nuisance, especially if it happens frequently. Whether you have excess soap scum, long hair, or something else (like mold) clogging your pipes, this is a problem that doesn’t go away on its own and must be handled immediately. Luckily, most shower drain odor and clog issues are easy to handle. But while tips on cleaning shower drain problems are helpful, it’s really best to take precautionary measures. Understand that if you can’t get rid of shower drain smells on your own, the water doesn’t drain—or worse, is backing up, it could be an issue with your sewer or septic tank. This is likely not a DIY fix, so it’s best to hire professional help. Just make sure you are using a plumber who is both licensed and insured. There are several causes of shower drain smells. The first step to take is a rather unpleasant one. Lean down and take a quick whiff. If the smell is musty, it’s possible that you have mold growing und...

Self-Priming Pumps Market Latest Trends and Future Growth Study by 2027

Self- priming pumps are a type of centrifugal pump used to pump dissolved gases. The pumps use an air and water mixture to reach a fully primed pumping condition. In addition, self-priming pumps are designed as a bare shaft, complete with a diesel motor, electric motor, hydraulic turbine, gasoline engine, and an explosion-proof design. Self- priming pumps are a kind of end-suction centrifugal pump which can work in a configuration of suction-lift without requiring an outer priming system. This makes them ideal for water supply where a suction head is required. Self-priming pumps do not require any complex valves for air evacuation. The global self-priming pumps market is fragmented, with the proliferation of various start-ups, especially in developing economies. Leading market players are focusing on designing innovative self-priming pumps to overcome the existing limits and enhance the operational efficiency. Founded in 1834, Sulzer Ltd. is an industrial engineering company that manufactures and supplies pump equipment. The company is headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland, with approximately 15,572 employees. Its manufacturing facilities are situated at Zuchwil, Switzerland....

It takes a lot of work to be a human. No, I’m not talking about getting along with your parents or finding a life philosophy that works for you — I’m talking about the absolute basics: grooming, hygiene, and generally staying your preferred version of clean. (Think about it: just taking a shower requires a fair bit of time and effort, what with all that getting wet and scrubbing and shampooing and conditioning.) And since this aspect of being human takes so much energy, I’m in favor of anything that makes it more fun — like these grooming and bathroom products on Amazon. Okay, so all these products are a little bit bizarre — which is what makes them so much fun. For example, there’s an LED light you shine in your mouth to help whiten your teeth. And just because these products are fun doesn’t mean they don’t work. In fact, all these products come backed with the approval of thousands of Amazon reviewers, so you can rest assured that the work you’re putting into being a human ...
