Protolabs celebrates 20th anniversary, inaugurates 12th global manufacturing plant

Leading digital manufacturing company Protolabs celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday with the inauguration of a new facility in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Occupying 215,000 square feet, the new plant speciliazes in providing CNC machining services. It is the company’s 8th factory in U.S. and the 12th in the world, accompanying other sites in Northern, Central and Southern Europe. “We are truly living in an on-demand consumer economy and that’s no different for manufacturing,” said Protolabs President and CEO Vicki Holt. “Our customers are hungry for manufacturing partners that can see their products through ever-shrinking life cycles, and Protolabs is uniquely positioned to serve our customers’ needs from early prototyping to on-demand production.” Protolabs was founded in Minnesota in 1999 by Larry Lukis, former Chairman and CTO of the company. At this time, the company developed an automated workflow to expedite the production in injection molding. Now the company has grown to encompass automated production processes for CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and additive manufacturing. As part of this expansion, the company acquired New Hampshire-based quick-turn sheet ...

FREMONT, CA – The emerging technologies have brought to light the impact of intensive farming on

FREMONT, CA – The emerging technologies have brought to light the impact of intensive farming on biodiversity. In the world today, almost 70 percent of the freshwater is used for agricultural purposes. Also, the pesticides and fertilizers used to control diseases and maximize yield affects the crop quality as well as the food chain. To minimize the detrimental practices employed in agriculture, several countries have passed regulations to control water and chemical usage. The innovations driven by the need for sustainable practices have given rise to precision agriculture (PA), a new method that utilizes internet of things (IoT), machine learning (ML), machine vision, and artificial intelligence (AI). Over the couple of years, manufacturers have started building equipment powered by some form of PA components. A greenhouse is a form of intensive farming in practice for the last few years. Although useful to some extent, it is not without problems. Greenhouse contraction is highly expensive, requiring high maintenance and climate regulation. Besides, greenhouse crops sustain diseases related to ground quality, humidity, and ventilation. The farmers keep track of crop health and t...

A boil water notice is in effect for south Bexar County after a loss of water

A boil water notice is in effect for south Bexar County after a loss of water pressure Tuesday, according to the San Antonio Water System. The combination of a water main break and closed valves near Loop 1604 and IH 37 south caused a loss of pressure to customers south of Loop 1604 near the Waterwood subdivision along Priest Road, according to SAWS. Service has already been restored, however state law requires that after pressure is restored and the system is cleared, water samples must be taken to confirm the water is safe, which will take approximately 24 hours. While SAWS has every expectation that water in the area is safe, as a precaution, customers are urged to follow boil water procedures until test results are back late Wednesday. When I got my first 3D printer I was excited, but now that I’m contemplating adding a forth to my collection, I have to come to the terms with the fact that these machines have all the novelty of a screwdriver at this point. Which is fine; getting the cost down and availability up is the key to turning a niche piece of technology into a mainstream tool, and the more people with 3D printers at home or in their workshop the better, as far as I’m concerned. But still, there’s a certain thrill in exploring the cutting edge, and I’ve been looking for something new to get excited about as of late. Lasers seem like an interesting next step in my quest towards complete in-house fabrication capability, so I started researching cheap setups to get my feet wet. In the course of looking up diode-powered laser cutters, I came across the NEJE DK-8-KZ. At only 1W, there’s no question this device isn’t going to be cutting a whole lot. In fact, it’s specifically sold as an engraver. But given the fact that you can get one of these little guys for around $70 USD shipped, it’s hard to complain. Now I wasn’t 100% sure what I would do with a laser engraver, but I thought it would be a good way to te...

Typically, mechanical metamaterial properties are programmed and set when the architecture is designed and constructed, and do not change in response to shifting environmental conditions or application requirements. We present a new class of architected materials called field responsive mechanical metamaterials (FRMMs) that exhibit dynamic control and on-the-fly tunability enabled by careful design and selection of both material composition and architecture. To demonstrate the FRMM concept, we print complex structures composed of polymeric tubes infilled with magnetorheological fluid suspensions. Modulating remotely applied magnetic fields results in rapid, reversible, and sizable changes of the effective stiffness of our metamaterial motifs. Cellular materials can be highly mechanically efficient, especially for coupled properties that often require trade-offs (1). For example, random cellular structures found in nature, such as teeth, bone, and bird beaks, have excellent strength and toughness relative to their density (2, 3). These stochastic cellular structures are often imitated in synthetic materials such as polymeric and metallic foams used for structural and functional a...

With graphics card prices near normal levels and no major hardware launches in sight for the time being, now is a great time to build a PC. There’s loads of choice when it comes to processors, motherboards, coolers, cases, SSDs and below you can see my picks of the best hardware you should be considering if you have around $1,000 to spend. Of course, there are plenty of ways to cut costs or improve performance by fine-tuning the system to your specific needs to in each category you’ll find my recommendations for slightly cheaper or better-performing options. This is a potent gaming PC that also includes a 500GB SSD for super-fast storage and responsiveness, the latest RGB memory and six-core Ryzen 2nd generation processor for grunt outside of games too. Check out the guide below or take a look at my YouTube video guide. Your main focus for a gaming PC should be your graphics card as this will dictate your frame rate at various resolutions and settings. I’m aiming for silky smooth 1080p gaming here, which is by far the most popular resolution according to the Steam Hardware Survey and for that you need Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, which incidentally is ...

Fuelish Pleasure Water sports is nowhere without a smooth-running engine. But today’s fuels, especially ethanol-blended gasoline, can challenge even the most fastidious boat owner’s diligence. Choose and use the correct fuel additive for your application. See the Difference Boating eyewear is essential for your health and for safe navigation. Look for lenses with high-UV and -IR ratings to ensure that your eyes are protected from the brightness only the waterborne experience. Polarization cuts glare, making it easy to see stumps, rocks and other obstructions below the water’s surface — not to mention seeing your rider by the dawn’s early light. Step It Up Certainly boating footwear should be selected for a grippy, nonmarking sole. It’s also important to make sure your feet and ankles have the right support, since footing can get rocky, even aboard the best-riding boats. And don’t forget quick-drying construction: Look for drain holes and other features that help ensure you won’t squish as you walk. Shine On Wax — or a synthetic replica — is a product that provides the final gleaming and protective finish to your ride, and it is all a new(ish) boat might need. Polishes are used t...

After enduring a winless season in 2018 and having an average start to the 2019 season, Pagenaud found himself the subject of rumors as to whether...

Best Sleeping Bags of 2019 | GearJunkie GJ Logo – Old Style GJ Logo

A sleeping bag is one of the most important pieces of camping gear. Choosing the right sleeping bag can help keep you warm (but not too warm), cozy, and rested. We’ll say it again: A good sleeping bag can be one of the most crucial investments an outdoorsperson makes. Choose a sleeping bag wisely, and it will fit your body shape and chemistry perfectly. It will suit your activities and weather conditions. Extra comforts will add a slice of luxury to rugged adventures for literally decades. But choose blindly and you risk losing comfort, money, and sleep. Don’t fret — that’s why we’re here. In addition to all the sleeping bags we’ve tested while camping the past year, we took more than 20 sleeping bags from top brands into the mountains of Colorado for a thorough camp gear test. Our goal: Find the best sleeping bags on the market right now. And not just our favorite, but also bags that meet the needs of the budget-conscious, ultralight enthusiasts, side-sleepers, and more. To evaluate the best sleeping bags, we took key performance factors into account, like warmth-to-weight ratio, temperature rating, construction, and features. But we didn’t limit ourselves strictly to new sleep...

The best electric scooters, e-bikes and rideable tech we’ve tested

It was a rare sunny day during an otherwise rainy spring season. I was cruising down Fredrick Douglas Boulevard just past 110th street, when a black Dodge Charger pulled up next to me, keeping pace toward the next light. I glanced over and saw the driver looking down at his phone, not paying attention. He accelerated to make the next right, not realizing that, on a Trek Super Commuter + 8S e-bike, I could easily hit 30 miles per hour, far faster than any car stuck in traffic usually can on the streets of Manhattan.  About to get crunched by the Dodge, I shouted, “Yo!” to the driver through his open window. Looking up from his phone he shouted back, “What are you doing?”  “I’m in the bike lane, what are you doing?” I replied. He clearly thought his car could beat me to the corner, but once I kicked into the Trek’s Turbo mode that adds more pedal-assist power, I shot past him.  It was just another day testing electric-powered rideables on the streets of New York, where the drivers hate the bikers, the bikers hate the drivers and everybody hates the scooter riders. And e-scooters and e-bikes are just the start of what’s availabl...
